195 Residents Registered on Day 1 as MHADA Launches Biometric Survey in Transit Camps

Mumbai, February 11, 2025: The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has initiated a biometric survey in transit camps across Mumbai city and suburbs. On the first day, 195 tenants and residents from the Sahakar Nagar, Chembur, transit camp successfully completed the biometric registration process.

The MHADA Mumbai Building Repairs & Redevelopment Board oversees 34 transit camps in Mumbai and its suburbs. As per the government resolution issued on September 13, 2019, the state government has mandated the classification of transit camp residents into three categories – A, B, and C. In a recent notification, the government has assigned the responsibility of conducting biometric verification of transit camp tenants to the MHADA Mumbai Building Repairs & Redevelopment Board to authenticate their residency status.

The biometric survey will verify the residency records of tenants by cross-checking their Aadhaar card details and using the e-KYC authentication system. Based on this process, MHADA will determine whether the residents of transit camps are authorized or unauthorized occupants. The survey has received an enthusiastic response from residents, and participation continues to increase.

On February 11, 2025, the biometric survey will continue at Sahakar Nagar, Chembur, following requests from residents. From February 12 to 17, 2025, the survey will be conducted in Bimbisar Nagar, Goregaon (East). After this, the survey will expand to other transit camps and rental housing societies to ensure that all tenants and residents are registered under this initiative.

As per the September 13, 2019, government resolution, transit camp residents have been classified into three categories. Category A consists of original residents who have been officially relocated to transit camps. Category B includes residents who have acquired tenancy rights through a power of attorney or similar legal authorization from the original tenant. Category C comprises unauthorized occupants who have taken possession of transit camp units without proper authorization.

MHADA’s biometric survey will help in verifying the authenticity of transit camp residents and identifying unauthorized occupants. This initiative aims to streamline the rehabilitation process for eligible residents and ensure transparency in the implementation of government housing policies.
