Mumbai, March 21, 2026:

Patel Engineering Limited (PEL), a Mumbai-based infrastructure firm, has been awarded a contract by Dorjilung Hydro Power Limited (DHPL) for pre-construction works on the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project in Bhutan. The contract, valued at BTN/INR 230.70 crore (excluding taxes), marks a major milestone for the company as it expands its footprint in the international renewable energy sector. DHPL is a joint venture between Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation Limited and India’s Tata Power Company Limited, Patel Engineering said in a press statement.

The Dorjilung project is a landmark initiative, standing as Bhutan’s largest hydroelectric project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It is designed to meet Bhutan’s rising domestic energy demands while facilitating the export of surplus clean power to India. By bolstering regional energy security, the project reinforces the strategic partnership between the two nations. Patel Engineering has been tasked with “Package I,” which involves critical civil and hydromechanical components necessary to kickstart the massive development.

The scope of work under this package is technically demanding, involving the construction of two 11.0-meter diameter diversion tunnels with lengths of 930 meters and 821 meters. Additionally, PEL will develop a 116-meter intermediate adit and a 500-meter highway road tunnel with a specialized D-shaped cross-section. The hydromechanical portion of the contract includes the installation of four sets of vertical lift fixed-wheel gates. Located approximately 7 kilometers from Autsho town in Mongar Dzongkhag, the project is scheduled for a 300-day construction period, followed by a one-year defects notification period.
