New Delhi, April 5, 2026:

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has announced its pivotal role in the commissioning of the INS Taragiri, the Indian Navy’s latest stealth frigate. The vessel, which is the fourth ship of the Nilgiri-class under Project 17A, was officially inducted into service on April 3, 2026. This achievement underscores the deepening synergy between domestic industrial giants and the nation’s defense requirements, the company said in a press statement.

The advanced warship was constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, utilizing “approximately 4,000 tonnes of special grade steel plates supplied by SAIL.” To meet the rigorous demands of modern naval warfare, the specialized steel was manufactured across SAIL’s integrated plants in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela. The successful delivery of these materials serves as a testament to the Maharatna PSU’s “advanced metallurgical capabilities and consistent quality standards,” ensuring the frigate possesses the structural integrity required for stealth operations.

This collaboration is part of a broader trajectory for SAIL, which has emerged as a cornerstone of the “Government’s flagship initiatives of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.” The company’s track record in defense indigenization is extensive; it previously provided the specialized steel for the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, as well as the three predecessor ships in the Project 17A class: “INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri and INS Udaygiri.”

The induction of the INS Taragiri is being hailed as “another milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.” By providing the essential raw materials for such complex platforms, domestic steel producers are proving to be instrumental in “strengthening the country’s maritime capabilities.” As the Navy continues to modernize its fleet, the partnership between the Ministry of Steel and defense shipbuilders remains a vital component of India’s strategic autonomy.
