Chandigarh Railway Station Redevelopment Nears Completion as World-Class Facilities Take Shape
Chandigarh, August 14, 2026: The ongoing redevelopment of Chandigarh Railway Station, executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, has reached 90% completion. The redeveloped site is set to serve as a modern gateway for the Chandigarh-Panchkula region, offering upgraded passenger amenities, improved circulation, and enhanced accessibility once fully operational, sources said.
The initiative is being executed as a brownfield redevelopment project at a fully functional railway station, requiring construction, utility shifting, and passenger facility upgrades to take place without disrupting continuous train schedules. RLDA acknowledged the temporary disruption during this final stage of transition and noted that ongoing measures are in place to limit the impact on daily commuters.
Upon completion, the redeveloped terminal will feature two multi-storey G+3 station buildings situated on the Chandigarh and Panchkula sides. These structures will be connected via a 72-metre-wide central Air Concourse alongside two 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridges. A major architectural highlight of the project is a 180-metre-long Through Roof spanning the Air Concourse and Foot Over Bridges to protect travelers from weather elements.
Upgrades are also underway across all six station platforms, featuring renewed surfacing and updated platform shelters. To ensure barrier-free access for senior citizens, Divyangjan, and travelers carrying heavy luggage, the facility is being outfitted with 16 lifts and 8 escalators. Additionally, circulating areas, vehicular parking, and drop-off or pick-up zones on both the Chandigarh and Panchkula entrances are undergoing restructuring to streamline traffic movement.
The project has transitioned into its final construction phase, which involves dismantling the existing Foot Over Bridge. Passenger pathways have been temporarily rerouted through the newly built station structures and the central section of the Air Concourse while neighboring construction continues. Crews are concurrently finishing the remaining roofing, sheeting, and drainage installations for the Through Roof structure.
Addressing recent passenger inconvenience caused by rainfall, RLDA noted that the issues were linked directly to active roofing and drainage construction rather than the final facility design. Priority has been assigned to finishing the remaining roof work, completing drainage lines, and removing the old Foot Over Bridge structure. RLDA reiterated its commitment to delivering long-term, modern infrastructure while maintaining site safety, continuous train schedules, and minimal disruption for travelers.
