WSO2 Makes AI Workspace Self-Hostable to Provide Sovereign AI Governance for Enterprises and Governments
New Delhi, August 26, 2026: WSO2 has announced that enterprises can now entirely self-host their artificial intelligence governance infrastructure by making its AI control plane, AI Workspace, available as part of its fully self-managed API Platform offering. The release allows regulated organizations to run AI governance within their own environments, offering a sovereign governance layer over AI estates including models, agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and cost structures, with no vendor-hosted component required, WSO2 said in a press release.
Through the self-managed AI Workspace, organizations can govern employee access to both external and sovereign Large Language Models (LLMs) and MCP servers, expose internal resources as MCP servers under unified policy controls, and manage costs, quotas, and chargebacks. These controls operate while applying guardrails across AI traffic flows deployed through integrated AI gateways. The platform provides AI developers with a dedicated workspace to access approved models and services while keeping data within customer-controlled boundaries.
The deployment option directly addresses regulatory expectations, particularly in Europe, where frameworks such as the EU AI Act, the proposed EU Cloud and AI Development Act, DORA, and NIS2 require organizations to prove control over AI decision-making processes and audit trails. While WSO2 previously allowed customers to run its AI gateway within their own environments, the governing AI control plane was previously available only as a WSO2-operated SaaS. With this update, both components can deploy on-premises, in national or sovereign clouds, or on hyperscalers, including in fully air-gapped setups with no outbound connection to WSO2.

Originally launched in March 2026 with SaaS and hybrid options, AI Workspace now supports fully self-hosted deployments to assist sovereign AI initiatives across WSO2’s client base, which includes 42 national government customers, more than 3,800 local government agencies, and regulated enterprises in financial services, healthcare, and telecommunications. The update aligns with WSO2’s unbundled platform strategy, allowing organizations to adopt AI gateway, API management, identity, and integration features selectively or deploy the complete platform, including API Manager, as a single binary.
The self-managed AI Workspace is generally available as part of the WSO2 API Platform, deployable via a quick start installer, virtual machine, Docker, or Kubernetes.
