L&T Delivers Multi-Purpose Vessel INS Samarthak to Indian Navy
New Delhi, September 1, 2026: L&T Precision Engineering & Systems (PES) has delivered INS Samarthak, the first-of-class multi-purpose vessel (MPV) built for the Indian Navy, from its Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai. Senior officials from the Indian Navy and L&T attended the handover ceremony for the newly constructed defense platform, L&T said in a press release.
INS Samarthak was conceptualized, engineered, and built entirely in-house at L&T’s Warship Design Centre and Shipyard. The vessel incorporates over 75 percent indigenous content, aligning with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Designed primarily as a specialized multi-role test and trials platform to support future naval combat technologies, the vessel is also equipped to execute maritime surveillance, patrolling, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), and environmental protection missions. For precision maneuvering during complex maritime operations, the ship features an advanced Dynamic Positioning System.
Celebrating the milestone, A T Ramchandani, Senior VP & Head – L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, highlighted the company’s manufacturing capability and commitment to domestic defense infrastructure. “This is a momentous occasion, and we are proud to have delivered the first of its kind multi-purpose vessel to the Navy. This reaffirms L&T’s shipbuilding capability to undertake construction of warships and showcases L&T’s commitment to national security,” Ramchandani said.
The delivery reinforces L&T’s role as a strategic engineering partner to the Indian Navy. The Kattupalli facility is currently constructing a second multi-purpose vessel alongside three Cadet Training Ships under ongoing naval contracts.
