SAIL Records Highest August Production and Double-Digit Sales Growth

New Delhi, September 4, 2026: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) recorded a strong performance in August 2026 and the April–August 2026 period, driven by record production figures, double-digit sales growth, and debt reduction, the company said in a press release.
In August 2026, the state-run steelmaker achieved its best-ever August output across key categories. Crude steel production rose 8% year-on-year to 1.68 million tonnes (MT) compared to 1.55 MT in the corresponding period last year (CPLY). Hot metal production increased 9% to 1.78 MT from 1.63 MT, while saleable steel output registered a 1% rise to 1.69 MT against 1.66 MT in CPLY.
Total sales for the month climbed 13% year-on-year to 1.871 MT from 1.654 MT in CPLY, supported by traction across Tier 1 and Tier 2 retail channels. Cash collections grew 23% during the same period. SAIL recorded its highest August sales in value-added segments, including cold rolled, galvanized, and alloy steels, alongside a reduction in inventory. Supplies of long rails to Indian Railways hit a record 1.12 lakh tonnes, reflecting an 11% increase, while total rail supplies grew 5% to 1.23 lakh tonnes.
The company also strengthened its balance sheet by reducing borrowings by Rs 870 crore compared to levels recorded on March 31, 2026.
For the cumulative April–August 2026 period, overall sales reached 7.71 MT, up 5.6% year-on-year, supported by steady domestic demand and an improved product mix despite global market volatility. Cash collections for the five-month period also maintained an upward trajectory.

Commenting on the results, A.K. Panda, Chairman & Managing Director, SAIL, said: “SAIL’s performance in August and the April-August’26 period reflects the organization’s growing alignment between operational capability, commercial delivery and financial prudence. The record production levels, strong sales momentum and disciplined financial management together underscore the Company’s strengthening fundamentals. With expansion projects progress and demand outlook remaining positive, SAIL is well positioned to accelerate its growth trajectory while contributing meaningfully to India’s steel consumption story.”
