Industry Leaders Call for Buyer Commitments to Boost India’s Green Steel Market

Hyderabad, September 18, 2026: Long-term buyer commitments, clearer pricing mechanisms, and stronger producer-buyer linkages emerged as key enablers for accelerating demand for low-carbon steel in India during a workshop convened by the India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) in Hyderabad. The event, themed “Driving the Transition to Low-Carbon Steel in India,” brought together over 70 stakeholders from steel producers, industrial buyers, and sustainability leaders. Formed as a joint initiative of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and WWF-India, the coalition represents approximately 70 percent of India’s crude steel production.

During a session on navigating low-carbon steelmaking, clean energy, and investment challenges, Gargi Mohanty, Senior Manager, Corporate Sustainability, Tata Steel Limited, highlighted the importance of building a collaborative steel ecosystem. Gargi Mohanty noted India’s role as the world’s second-largest steel producer and consumer, while pointing to the country’s 2024 Green Steel Taxonomy—the first globally to introduce a star-rating system categorizing green steel based on carbon emission intensity thresholds. Gargi Mohanty outlined 14 levels of the green transition and emphasized that accelerating progress requires collective action across the value chain.

Addressing demand-side perspectives, Amrit Sahu, Category Lead, Sourcing & Procurement, Blue Star Limited, outlined the operational challenges buyers face regarding green premiums, availability, quality, and supply reliability. Amrit Sahu set out three expectations from green steel producers: verified carbon data, predictable pricing, and assured supply. Steel mills providing credible carbon data, clear price bands, and capacity visibility will be better positioned to secure long-term buyer commitments, while predictable green premiums remain essential for original equipment manufacturers planning procurement decisions.

A fireside chat titled “Aligning Production, Buyer Commitments & Market Pricing” featured representatives from My Home Constructions, RMI Energy Solutions India Foundation, JSW Steel, L&T, Kirloskar Brothers, and Ford Motor Company. Moderated by Vishal Dev, Director, Sustainable Business, WWF-India, the panel examined how stronger buyer commitments create market certainty for producers and how transparent pricing structures support purchasing decisions.

The event concluded by emphasizing that sustained collaboration among steel producers, buyers, policymakers, financial institutions, and technology providers is essential to overcome commercial and technical barriers to scaling low-carbon steel in India.
