BMS, as we know, is a system that controls and manages various mechanical and electrical features of a particular building. As opposed to that, an integrated BMS (or IBMS) controls and monitors a set of buildings that form part of a housing or commercial complex. With its various advantages, IBMs has the potential of transforming lives for the better.

A Building Management System (BMS) is a control system that is used in a housing society or a commercial facility to control and manage its mechanical and electrical features. The BMS manages features such as power, streetlight, water management, air-conditioning, heating and physical access control of a premises.

An ‘integrated’ BMS, on the other hand, means that that the building’s system management capabilities were part of the building’s initial design. In other words, these were not added after-the-fact. In simple words, an Integrated Building Management Systems (or IBMS) includes BMS while incorporating many other subsystems.

All the systems can be accessed remotely using a single interface which can be accessed using a laptop or a mobile phone. It enables subsystems like electric metering, water and DG management to communicate with each other and maintain an optimal use of these resources.

A real-world example of an IBMS is when in a society a DG is working on a 30 per cent capacity, against its maximum capacity of 80 per cent,

it consumes more fuel. With the help of IBMS, the system can not only utilise the DG set at its full capacity, but also utilise the electricity supply in other systems as well; systems such as filling water tanks and that too optimally. This results in fuel saving as well as cut in electricity cost.

This one example is sufficient to prove that IBMS has the potential of transforming lives for the better in any housing society, office or commercial establishment. Working together for a safer and efficient living environment, integrated systems are a boon in today’s environment.
