CREDAI Chennai Urges Fast-Tracking of Alternative Site for Chennai’s Second Airport
Chennai, August 25, 2026: CREDAI Chennai has responded to Chief Minister Joseph Vijay‘s announcement in the Assembly that the state government will not proceed with the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur, urging the administration to finalize an alternative location without delay, CREDAI Chennai said in a press release.
While acknowledging the decision and the government’s sensitivity to farmers’ concerns, the real estate industry body described the move as a setback that delays Chennai’s need for expanded aviation infrastructure. The association noted that large land acquisition projects inevitably encounter agricultural and environmental challenges, but emphasized that these issues must be balanced alongside Tamil Nadu’s long-term economic development interests.
Highlighting regional competition, CREDAI Chennai stated that connectivity remains central to the city’s growth, observing that Chennai has fallen to sixth position in passenger traffic after being overtaken by Kolkata. The body pointed to peer metropolitan regions—including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai—which are actively expanding existing facilities or building secondary airports to maintain competitive advantages in attracting investment, industry, and talent.
CREDAI Chennai welcomed the end of uncertainty regarding Parandur and called on the government to fast-track the selection and finalization of a new site under a strict timeline. The association also addressed the proposed expansion and new terminal capacity at the current Meenambakkam airport, cautioning that severe site constraints exist and stressing that the expansion should serve only as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, a second airport.
