Noida International Airport Clears Final Regulatory Hurdle; Inauguration Likely This Month
Noida, March 8, 2026: The Noida International Airport received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday. The certification, issued under the Aircraft Rules, 1937, serves as the final regulatory seal of approval, confirming that the facility meets all national requirements for safety, infrastructure, navigation, and emergency response, media reports said.

The milestone follows just twenty-four hours after the airport received critical security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). With these dual approvals in place, the path is now clear for a formal inauguration. Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) CEO RK Singh confirmed the readiness of the facility, stating, “The clearance means the airport is ready for takeoff and landing of flights. We will seek time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the airport.”
Sources indicate the inauguration could take place in the last week of March, potentially coinciding with the festival of Navratri. Shailendra Bhatia, nodal officer at Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), noted that the transition to active service will be swift. “This approval confirms that the airport’s infrastructure, safety procedures and operational systems meet the standards set by the national aviation regulator,” Bhatia said. “The first flights can begin within about 45 days, during which time all stakeholders — ground staff, technicians and airport personnel — will be deployed.”
While the ceremonial opening is expected this month, commercial flight operations are slated to begin around the second week of April. Major carriers, including IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express, have already confirmed their participation, with initial routes expected to link Noida to Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of Noida International Airport, emphasized a measured approach to the launch, previously stating that “operations would begin gradually.” He added, “We are committed to delivering a modern, efficient and passenger-centric airport that will serve as a catalyst for regional economic growth.”
The airport’s readiness is the result of years of synchronized construction and technical testing. Calibration flights for the Instrument Landing System (ILS) were completed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in November, and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has already assumed control of site security. Beyond the runway and terminal, a 750-metre access road now connects the facility directly to the Yamuna Expressway, and contracts for ground handling and fuel services have been finalized.

Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu highlighted the broader impact the hub will have on the National Capital Region. “The world-class airport will boost tourism, investment and regional economic growth,” Naidu said. “It will also help ease congestion at existing airports while offering passengers a modern and seamless travel experience.” In its initial phase, the airport will handle 12 million passengers annually, with a long-term capacity goal of 70 million upon the completion of all four development phases.
