Physical AI Goes Mainstream as Manufacturers Scale Implementation, TCS Study Reveals

Mumbai, July 23, 2026: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced the findings of its Future-Ready Manufacturing: TCS Physical AI Readiness Report 2026, revealing that as global manufacturers increase their artificial intelligence investments, the enterprise focus is rapidly shifting from standalone automation projects toward larger physical AI ecosystems, TCS said in a press release.

The study indicates that manufacturers view physical AI as a people-first transformation. Rather than replacing the workforce, industrial companies are utilizing intelligent systems to help employees work more safely, efficiently, and productively through a hybrid human-and-AI operating model that supports workforce redeployment where needed.

Based on a survey of 300 CXOs and vice presidents across North America and Europe conducted between March and April 2026, the report highlights how enterprises are preparing to scale physical AI across factories, warehouses, logistics networks, maintenance, and quality management environments. Featured sectors included automotive, electronics and high-tech manufacturing, industrial equipment and machinery, process industries, and aerospace and defense.

According to the findings, manufacturers are committing to long-term physical AI investments, with zero respondents planning to reduce spending and 26% planning to increase budgets. High operational impact is anticipated across core areas, with 77% of manufacturers expecting significant or transformational impact in warehouse operations, followed by assembly and manufacturing operations at 75%, and logistics and material movement at 72%. Additionally, 42% expect significant workforce augmentation by using physical AI to support workers in complex, hazardous, or repetitive industrial settings.

Despite high expectations, the report notes that enterprise deployment remains in its early stages. Currently, 68% of manufacturers remain in non-deployment or experimental phases, identifying legacy system integration, data infrastructure, and workforce skills as the primary hurdles to enterprise-scale adoption. Governance also emerges as a crucial focus area, with 44% reporting unclear or no formal accountability structures for physical AI failures and 40% feeling unprepared for emerging regulatory requirements.

Anupam Singhal, President of Manufacturing at TCS, said, “Physical AI is taking intelligence beyond the screen and onto the shop floor, where machines sense, adapt and act in real time. The manufacturers that scale it successfully will define the next era of manufacturing. TCS’ ‘infrastructure to intelligence’ approach positions them to lead that transformation. With all the manufacturers in our study planning to either maintain or increase the investment, the direction is clear: towards more resilient, adaptive, and future-ready manufacturing enterprises.”

Kevin Ichhpurani, President of the Global Partner Ecosystem at Google Cloud, said, “Physical AI is moving manufacturing from digital insight to autonomous real-world action. Through our partnership with TCS, we are bringing Gemini’s multimodal reasoning to the factory floor, enabling robots and systems to operate safely and intelligently in complex industrial environments.”

The findings build on the ongoing partnership between TCS and Google Cloud, following the March 2026 launch of the TCS Physical AI Gemini Experience Center in Troy, Michigan. Supported by tools like the TCS Physical AI Blueprint, the initiative combines AI-powered quadruped and humanoid robotics with edge intelligence and cloud orchestration to help global manufacturers move from small-scale pilots to enterprise-wide physical AI adoption.
