RUSAL Commissions World’s First Inert Anode Electrolyser, Opening Path to Large-Scale Green Aluminium Production

RUSAL has officially commissioned the world’s first industrial inert anode electrolyser, moving the technology from experimental trials to commercial application. This breakthrough offers a blueprint for decarbonizing existing smelters by replacing carbon anodes with a process that emits pure oxygen instead of $CO_2$. For every tonne of aluminium produced, the unit releases approximately 900 kg of oxygen, effectively eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissions from the smelting stage, the company said in a press release. 

The strategic importance of this milestone centers on its compatibility with current industrial assets. RUSAL, which operates thousands of electrolysers across its various smelters, views this launch as the inaugural phase of a massive modernization effort. By integrating these inert anodes into its existing facilities rather than requiring entirely new plants, the company is establishing a realistic pathway to produce green aluminium at scale throughout its Russian production hubs. This transition is designed to meet the growing global demand for low-carbon materials as international regulators tighten restrictions on embedded carbon footprints.

The technology has already proven its durability outside of the laboratory setting. Since 2017, the company has systematically refined the process, yielding approximately 6,000 tonnes of commercial-grade aluminium and maintaining high standards for both process stability and product quality. RUSAL’s low-carbon brand, ALLOW INERTA, is already making its way into global supply chains. Recent achievements include the production of Russia’s first aluminium can featuring 64% recycled content and the 2025 shipment of a 25-tonne batch to a major Chinese foil manufacturer, proving the material’s readiness for diverse applications ranging from automotive parts to food packaging.

Reflecting on the successful transition to industrial use, Evgenii Nikitin, CEO of RUSAL, emphasized the broader implications for the industry and its customers. “We have completed industrial trials and achieved stable production of commercial-grade aluminium using inert anodes,”
