New Delhi, August 21, 2026: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has welcomed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, which was notified by the Central Government on August 17, 2026. The state-owned steelmaker stated that the legislative change represents a significant reform toward establishing a predictable fiscal regime and long-term policy certainty in the Indian mineral sector.

According  to  a SAIL press release, the amendment provides greater clarity and uniformity regarding mineral taxation and levies, while addressing pending retrospective levies to provide improved certainty and confidence across the mining industry. For SAIL, which manages substantial captive iron ore and coal mining operations, the reform is expected to enhance the economic viability of its mining operations, facilitate new investments and mine developments, and strengthen long-term raw-material security.

The public sector undertaking noted that the reform will facilitate increased domestic availability of iron ore. With improved viability and development of its captive mines, SAIL will be able to offer additional iron ore for sale in the open market in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework, thereby supporting indigenous raw material supply chains for the broader Indian steel industry.

The company stated that the statutory updates will encourage higher investment and domestic production, reduce import reliance, and enhance the overall competitiveness of mineral-based industries. SAIL added that it remains committed to the responsible and sustainable development of its mineral resources, strengthening captive raw-material security while supporting national manufacturing goals.
