New Delhi, May 10, 2026: In a significant leadership transition for the nation’s steel sector, Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda officially took charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on May 9, 2026. Dr. Panda, a seasoned veteran of the company, steps into the role after serving as Director (Finance), a tenure during which he also balanced the additional responsibilities of Director (Commercial) for nearly nine months, SAIL said in a press release.

The new CMD’s trajectory within the Maharatna PSU is a testament to long-term institutional growth, having started his career with SAIL as a Management Trainee (Technical) in 1992. An electrical engineer by training, Dr. Panda’s three-decade ascent through the ranks has been defined by his presence across various plants and units. This diverse exposure allowed him to master the complex intersection of operational, financial, and commercial domains that define the global steel industry.

During his previous stint as Director (Finance), Dr. Panda was instrumental in orchestrating a series of strategic interventions designed to bolster the company’s bottom line. His leadership saw a heavy emphasis on enriching the product basket and revamping internal policies across human resources and marketing to drive technical efficiency. While managing the commercial portfolio, he was credited with aligning production schedules with market demand, specifically focusing on reducing inventory and improving Net Sales Realisation (NSR).

Respected by peers for an inclusive, people-centric approach, Dr. Panda is expected to lean on his reputation for strong execution as SAIL enters a pivotal growth window. Upon taking the helm, he immediately underscored the company’s roadmap, highlighting a massive scale-up in production capabilities and a renewed focus on the security of the supply chain.

At the same time, we are committed to expanding our market reach with a sharper focus on value-added products, strengthening our brand connect and ensuring sustained value creation for all stakeholders.”
