Meghalaya Expands Presence in Mumbai, Foundation Stone Laid for New Meghalaya House at Kharghar
Mumbai, August 9, 2026: The Governments of Meghalaya and Maharashtra marked a significant milestone in interstate collaboration today with the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new Meghalaya House at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. The event followed the formal handing over of land by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Government of Maharashtra, the Government of Meghalaya said in a press release.
The new facility marks a major expansion of Meghalaya’s institutional presence in Mumbai and reinforces the State Government’s commitment to providing better facilities for citizens traveling for medical treatment, higher education, official assignments, business, and tourism. The foundation stone was jointly laid by Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, underscoring the enduring partnership between the two States and their shared commitment to cooperative federalism.
Dignitaries in attendance included Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya; Sosthen K. Sohtun, Minister, General Administration Department, Government of Meghalaya; Milind Deora, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha; and Nitin Patil, Mayor, Panvel Municipal Corporation. Members of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly present included Aniket Tatkare, Vikrant Patil, Prashant Thakur, Mahendra Thorve, Mahesh Baldi, and Manda Mhatre. Senior administration officials including Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, and Cyril V. D. Diengdoh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, General Administration Department, Government of Meghalaya, were also present alongside representatives of CIDCO.
The project addresses the growing demand for accommodation from citizens visiting Mumbai. Since its establishment in 2008, the existing Meghalaya House at Vashi, which has a capacity of 12 rooms, has been operating under increasing pressure, particularly due to patients traveling to Tata Memorial Hospital. The new campus at Kharghar, spanning 2,071.67 square meters, will substantially enhance accommodation capacity and public facilities.
Speaking on the occasion, Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, thanked the Maharashtra leadership, CIDCO, and local representatives for their support in making the project possible. He described the establishment of Meghalaya House at a prime location as a significant moment for the State given the constraints of land in the city. “For us as a State of Meghalaya, today almost feels like a dream,” he said, expressing his gratitude to the Government of Maharashtra for helping turn the aspiration into reality.
Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, also highlighted the strong presence of people from Meghalaya in Maharashtra across healthcare, education, business, music, sports, and entrepreneurship. He expressed confidence that the new facility would further deepen connections between the two States, adding, “At the end of the day, this is not something that we are doing for us, this is for the people of Meghalaya.”
In his address, Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, welcomed the visiting delegation and highlighted the deep cultural and people-to-people connections between Maharashtra and Meghalaya. He noted that Mumbai and Pune have long been important destinations for students, artists, and professionals from the Northeast. “This is not merely Maharashtra’s or Mumbai’s land; this is the future of the country,” he said, emphasizing the growing importance of the Kharghar region.
Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, also spoke of Meghalaya’s strong association with music and acknowledged the contribution of its citizens working across various sectors in Maharashtra. He commended Meghalaya’s growing economy under its current leadership and expressed enthusiasm for expanding future cultural and economic relationships between both States.
Highlighting the project’s institutional backing, Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, described the project as the outcome of sustained collaboration between the two state governments and acknowledged the goodwill extended by CIDCO and various state machinery departments.
Adding context on the choice of location, Cyril V.D. Diengdoh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, General Administration Department, Government of Meghalaya, noted that Kharghar is emerging as a major hub for innovation, new technology, and data centers. He stated that the new Meghalaya Bhavan would complement this emerging ecosystem while serving as a dedicated space of hospitality and support.
The ceremony also celebrated Meghalaya’s cultural heritage through a special performance by the Khmih Creative Society under the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme. The establishment of the facility represents another step in the Meghalaya Government’s vision of building modern, accessible public infrastructure while strengthening interstate partnerships.
