India Literacy Board Celebrates Dr Veldhi Fisher’s 147th Birth Anniversary, Awards Scholarships
Lucknow, September 19, 2026: The India Literacy Board celebrated the 147th birth anniversary of its founder, Dr Veldhi Fisher, at Saksharta Niketan on September 18. During the ceremony, the organization distributed the Dr Veldhi Fisher Scholarship to state-level toppers of the U.P. Board of Secondary Education examinations and felicitated meritorious students and outstanding teachers\

The event commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by cultural performances and student speeches detailing Fisher’s contributions to literacy. The programme was presided over by Sanjay Bhoosreddy, IAS (Retd.), Chairman, India Literacy Board and Chairman, U.P. RERA, while Sandhya Tiwari, IAS (Retd.), Director, India Literacy Board, welcomed the guests and presented an overview of the organization’s activities.
During the awards ceremony, Intermediate state topper Shikha Verma (97.60%) received a cheque of Rs 30,000 for the first half-year, calculated at Rs 5,000 per month, alongside a memento and certificate. Joint High School toppers Anshika Verma and Kashish Verma (97.83%) were each awarded Rs 9,000 for the first half-year at Rs 1,500 per month. Additionally, Ummehbeeba, High School topper of Veldhi Fisher Children’s Academy (88.80%), received Rs 18,000 for the first half-year at Rs 3,000 per month. The scholarships will be provided continuously for two years. A total of 41 students from Nursery to Class 11, four students with 100 percent attendance, and two teachers—Divya Shri Gautami and Farheen—were also felicitated.
Addressing the gathering, Sanjay Bhoosreddy, IAS (Retd.), Chairman, India Literacy Board, highlighted the history of Saksharta Niketan in education, skill development, and modern agriculture, encouraging students to draw inspiration from Fisher’s principles to serve the nation.
Chief Guest Dr Parthasarathi Sen Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary, Secondary Education and Basic Education Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, noted that India’s literacy rate had risen from approximately 18 percent at the time of the Board’s founding to around 83 percent today.
