The proposal to levy VAT is a welcome step but would actually create a hole in the buyer’s pocket. The VAT being indirect tax would ultimately be passed on to the buyers. This would have a marginal increment in the property prices. In Maharashtra, the VAT is already being passed on to the buyers which was a precursor for passing on this indirect tax pan-India. Due to the delay in GST, this step is being taken by various state governments.
