Multipoint connection: Conversion process is smooth and simple

Since it is mandated for all new housing societies to have multipoint connections for power supply and even the existing societies prefer to go for these, once must understand the process involved. As it turns out, the conversion process is pretty simple, smooth, and swift. Here’s what all it entails. 

It is worthwhile gaining awareness about conversion to multipoint connections since UP Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) had quite some time back mandated all high-rise societies to have multipoint connections in new constructions. For existing societies, it had ordered that if 51 per cent of residents had consented not to retain the single-point connection, the conversion to multipoint system should be taken up immediately.

In multipoint connection, direct connection from the Electricity Department is given to each flat-owner in the housing society. Apart from many other advantages, the consumers having multipoint connections enjoy the benefit of slab-based tariff rates on their electricity bills as per their energy consumption. These slab tariffs are much lower than the existing tariff rates of single-point connection.

Post the awareness drive, the flat-owners are required to apply for the multipoint connection by filling the consent forms along with the submission of required documents.

Once all the documents are submitted and the payment is made, smart prepaid meter infrastructure with dual source, dual register meters are deployed in the society.

A separate connection is provided for the common area and the CAP charges are calculated as the difference between the main meter reading and the sum of the consumer meter readings.

For initiating the conversion process, the flat-owners or the RWA need to contact their local electricity division office. A camp would be set up by the Electricity Department in the society with the purpose of educating the consumers about the benefits of multipoint connection and also making them aware of the entire procedure. The camp attempts to solve all the queries of the residents.

Post the awareness drive, the flat-owners are required to apply for the multipoint connection by filling the consent forms along with the submission of required documents such as allotment letter, possession certificate, Registry documents and ID proof etc. The process also requires a one-time payment by each flat-owner.

Once all the documents are submitted and the payment is made, smart prepaid meter infrastructure with dual source, dual register meters are deployed in the society to manage and control the energy consumption. These meters measure the electricity consumption separately for the grid and the DG (diesel generator) supply.

Once it is done, the consumers can pay their electricity bills online through an app provided by the power utility. A separate connection is provided for the common area and the CAP charges are calculated as the difference between the main meter reading and the sum of the consumer meter readings.

A centralised server is set up for the multipoint connections at the utility’s IT Centre. A separate account is maintained for every consumer and the password is shared by the utility management with the flat-owners.
