ABB Partners With Ferrari Hypersail to Advance Marine Electrification

Zurich, September 17, 2026: Technology company ABB has announced a strategic technology partnership with Ferrari Hypersail, an innovative 100-foot oceanic full-foiling monohull yacht powered entirely by renewable energy systems. Serving as the official Electrification Partner, ABB will provide technical expertise across marine power, Direct Current (DC) technology, and advanced electrical management to support the vessel’s offshore capabilities, ABB said in a press release.
The Ferrari Hypersail project is engineered to operate in extreme marine environments while balancing onboard power generation, energy storage, and real-time distribution. ABB will leverage over 25 years of DC technology experience to assist in developing the yacht’s power infrastructure, which functions as a self-sufficient microgrid operating at 48V and 800 VDC. The onboard electrical system will manage critical power delivery for navigation, foil controls, safety mechanisms, and propulsion under harsh ocean conditions.

Commenting on the collaboration, Giampiero Frisio, President of ABB’s Electrification business area, highlighted the broader industrial applications of the project. He said, “Ferrari Hypersail gives ABB a unique platform to demonstrate how we are collaborating with partners to push the limits of Direct Current technology. Ferrari Hypersail is designed to operate in conditions that are as demanding as anything our systems face in industry. The lessons from a challenge like this can help us advance the resilient, efficient power systems our customers need across sectors from marine and renewables to data centers and industrial microgrids.”

Outlining the operational demands of the vessel, Enrico Voltolini, Project Leader of Ferrari Hypersail, emphasized the importance of reliable energy integration. He said, “Hypersail runs entirely on renewable energy. It has to be self-sufficient for weeks at a time in the most hostile ocean environments on earth. Having ABB’s electrification expertise connected to the project is a valuable operational advantage.”
ABB’s engineering team will support system integration, intelligent power distribution, and operational resilience throughout the initiative. Insights gained from testing the yacht’s electrical architecture in high-demand sea conditions are expected to inform future power system developments across commercial marine shipping, data centers, and renewable energy infrastructure.
