CII Indian Green Building Council Launches 32nd Chapter in Ranchi, Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 8, 2025: The CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) launched its 32nd Chapter in Ranchi through a grand event at Radisson Blu Hotel on Saturday. Sunil Kumar, principal secretary, urban development and housing department, Jharkhand, was the chief guest. Besides, a distinguished gathering of industry leaders, government officials and sustainability champions was present.

With Ranchi poised for robust urban growth, the new IGBC chapter was established to catalyse the adoption of sustainable building practices across the region. By engaging stakeholders at every level, IGBC seeks to foster a future-ready built environment that prioritizes energy conservation, low-carbon materials and healthy living spaces.

Kumar said, “The launch of the IGBC Ranchi Chapter marks a significant step in Jharkhand’s urban development journey. As the state experiences rapid growth, our cities must evolve into a sustainable, resource-efficient and climate-resilient manner. The Jharkhand government is committed to creating an enabling policy and regulatory environment that encourages green building practices, fosters innovation in construction materials and technologies and prioritises the well-being of our citizens.”

He added, “We look forward to working closely with IGBC, industry leaders and professionals to build a future-ready Jharkhand that balances development with environmental responsibility.”

He also expressed his desire and willingness to convert few of the operational government buildings as IGBC green certified. Smaller projects and affordable housing under the purview of the state government would also be rated under suitable green building frameworks and the department would lend all possible support and leadership to IGBC.

C Shekar Reddy, National Vice-chairman, IGBC, remarked, “The launch of the IGBC Ranchi Chapter is another milestone in IGBC’s nation-wide movement to scale green and net zero buildings. Jharkhand’s real estate and infrastructure sector holds immense potential to embrace sustainability as both an environmental imperative and a strategic opportunity.”

IGBC is committed to empowering regional stakeholders to translate green intent into measurable impact, by providing tools, know-how, and a collaborative platform. “Together, we can make Jharkhand a beacon of sustainable development in east India.”

Rajiv Chadda, Chairman, IGBC Ranchi Chapter, said, “We are proud to lay the foundation for what promises to be a transformative journey for Ranchi and Jharkhand. The formation of this chapter is a call to action for professionals, policymakers and citizens alike—to build not just for today, but for generations to come.”

Piyush More, Co-chairman, IGBC Ranchi Chapter, said, “As we conclude today’s inaugural session, I would like to emphasise that green buildings are about reimagining value—using fewer resources while enhancing occupant well-being and ensuring long-term benefits for all stakeholders.”

The IGBC Ranchi Chapter will play the role of a support system and innovation hub, guiding builders, developers and partners through every step of this green transition.

“With our collective commitment, Ranchi has the potential to set a benchmark for sustainable urban development in eastern India. Let us work together to make green building not just an aspiration, but the new normal for Jharkhand.”

The inaugural session was followed by an exclusive panel discussion titled “Local Aspirations and Way Forward Towards a Greener Built Jharkhand”. Eminent voices from government, industry, academia and the architecture fraternity—including Atilesh Gautam (Jharkhand Renewable Energy Development Agency), Sumeet Kumar Agarwal (CREDAI Jharkhand), Atul Saraf (IIA Jharkhand) and R Naresh Kumar (BIT Mesra)—shared insights on integrating regional priorities, policy frameworks and innovative solutions to promote sustainability.

The panel addressed challenges in balancing growth with environmental responsibility, the importance of net-zero targets and the role of new technologies and rating systems in accelerating progress.

The event concluded with a technical session on “Green Building Materials, Technologies & Solutions” featuring presentations on energy-efficient glazing systems, green steel, low-carbon cement and IGBC certification by leading sector experts from Saint Gobain, Tata Steel, UltraTech Cement and ACS Green Consulting.

The session provided actionable guidance on implementing the latest sustainable materials and practices, showcasing case studies that can inspire local industry.

Jharkhand is making notable strides towards embracing green buildings and sustainable urban development with the launch of the IGBC Ranchi Chapter as a key milestone in this progress. The state is increasingly engaging government agencies, industry bodies, academics and developers to promote energy efficiency, low-carbon construction materials and green certification standards.

This collaborative approach reflects Jharkhand’s growing commitment to align with India’s broader sustainability goals and foster a resilient, environmentally responsible built environment.
