Jai Prakash Associates Promoters File Petition in SC Against Land Cancellation in Noida
Noida, June 27, 2025: The promoters of Jai Prakash Associates Ltd (JAL) have filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court (SC) to challenge the Allahabad High Court’s (HC) decision upholding the cancellation of its Sports City land along the Yamuna Expressway by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
The 1,000 hectare Sports City land was allotted to JAL for developing a mixed-use project with sports infrastructure, including the Buddh International Circuit.
The Authority had cancelled the land in February 2020 citing non-payment of dues and violation of lease conditions, triggering multiple rounds of litigation.
In March, the HC upheld the land cancellation and directed YIEDA to take it over and complete the housing projects launched by JAL more than a decade ago.
An SC Bench comprising Justices KV Viswanathan and NK Singh heard the SLP, filed by Sunil Kumar Sharma and another suspended promoter in their personal capacity as guarantors to JAL’s debt, on Monday.
The promoters’ counsel argued that the resumption of the land by YEIDA substantially increased their liabilities as guarantors under the insolvency process. The land is a key asset for JAL’s financial recovery and revival under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, the counsel further argued.
YEIDA’s legal team objected to any interim relief and submitted that two other SLPs—one filed by JAL through its insolvency resolution professional and another by the committee of creditors—were already heard by the court and no stay or status quo was granted.
Subsequently, the apex court, which refused to grant interim stay on a plea filed on June 7, directed the current SLP to be tagged with the pending related case.
The next hearing is scheduled for July 29.
