Noida International Airport Secures BCAS Clearance; Commercial Flights Expected Within 45 Days
Noida, March 6, 2026: Noida International Airport has received official security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). This step moves the greenfield project into its final stretch, as the clearance formally approves the airport’s core security framework, including its bomb threat and anti-hijack contingency plans. With these regulatory documents now vetted, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to conduct a final inspection and issue the formal aerodrome license within the coming weeks.
According to officials at Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), domestic passenger flights and cargo operations are projected to begin within 45 days of the license being granted. While domestic services are the immediate priority, international operations are currently scheduled to commence in September. Nodal officer Shailendra Bhatia confirmed that the essential infrastructure for the first phase – including the terminal building, air traffic control tower, and runway – is fully complete and prepared to handle an initial capacity of 12 million passengers annually.
The project’s leadership has also been a point of discussion, as Union aviation secretary Samir Sinha has worked to ensure that the appointment of an expatriate CEO does not cause administrative delays. The airport is headed by Christoph Schnellmann, a Swiss national and veteran of Zurich Airports who previously played a key role in the development of Bengaluru’s airport. Government sources defended the appointment, noting that India’s largest airlines are also led by expats and comparing the situation to Indian-born CEOs leading global tech giants like Google and Microsoft.
On the ground, the transition to active status is nearly invisible but highly coordinated. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took over site security last year, and residential facilities for personnel have already been developed on the premises. Additionally, major carriers such as IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air are expected to open ticket bookings as soon as the aerodrome license is secured. Connectivity is also established, with a 750-meter access road now linking the facility directly to the Yamuna Expressway.
During a recent event in Greater Noida West, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath affirmed that the country’s largest airport would be inaugurated soon. While the infrastructure and manpower training are now complete, the formal inauguration date will be finalized by the Prime Minister’s Office. With security hurdles cleared and the multimodal cargo hub ready for deployment, the region is now standing by for the official start of commercial aviation.
