Patel Engineering Delivers Engineering Marvel With Breakthrough Of India’s Longest Irrigation Tunnel

Bhopal, July 19, 2026: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav today visited the Sleemanabad Carrier Canal Project site following the successful breakthrough of India’s longest irrigation tunnel. Executed by a Patel Engineering Limited-led consortium, the nearly 12-kilometer tunnel marks a major advancement in the state’s irrigation infrastructure. The landmark project is designed to provide assured irrigation to nearly 2.45 lakh hectares across approximately 1,450 villages, bolstering water security and fostering sustainable agricultural development throughout eastern Madhya Pradesh, Patel Engineering said in a press release.

The canal project forms a vital component of the larger Bargi Diversion Project, which is being developed by the Narmada Valley Development Authority. Operating through a 197-kilometer trans-valley canal, the system will transfer water from the Bargi Dam on the Narmada River. In addition to servicing agricultural fields across the Jabalpur, Katni, Panna, Satna, Maihar, and Rewa districts, the initiative will supply 284 million liters of domestic and industrial water per day to the cities of Jabalpur and Katni.

Completing the subterranean structure required navigating some of the most challenging geological and hydrogeological conditions ever encountered in the nation’s irrigation sector. Engineers pushed the tunnel alignment through a volatile mix of compact residual soils, silts, alluvium, and highly weathered limestone, alongside segments of massive crystalline limestone, slate, and fresh marble showcasing rock strengths up to 180 MPa. For the initial 2.7 kilometers, a highly permeable, water-bearing boulder horizon sat just two to three meters above the tunnel crown, keeping the water table consistently above the excavation path as it passed underneath rural areas, dense urban zones, and a lake.

To overcome these complex subterranean variables beneath the Vindhyan ranges, the engineering team deployed advanced technological solutions from both ends of the alignment. Operations began from the downstream end using a 10-meter diameter Hybrid Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine from Robbins. When underground conditions grew increasingly severe, a second similar machine from Herrenknecht was introduced from the upstream end. Working in tandem, both machines dynamically adapted to the changing ground conditions in real time, alternating between hard rock Single Shield operations and pressurized soft-ground configurations.
