New Delhi, August 19, 2026: The allotment of 1 crore homes to women under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) represents a significant development in inclusive housing and economic participation, according to NAREDCO Mahi, the women’s wing of the National Real Estate Development Council. The organization noted that female participation in the sector has expanded beyond property ownership into professional, entrepreneurial, and leadership roles.

Data under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 indicates that more than 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned to date, with 1 crore properties registered either solely under women’s names or through joint ownership. The trend continued during the 8th Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting for PMAY-U 2.0 held in August 2026, which approved over 2.09 lakh houses, allocating approximately 2.03 lakh of those units to female beneficiaries,  NAREDCO Mahi said in a press release.

Industry body representatives highlighted that female involvement is shaping consumer decisions, investment streams, and corporate leadership within the property market. According to NAREDCO Mahi, incorporating more women across the real estate value chain contributes directly to greater diversity and structural resilience within the broader economy.

Commenting on the housing milestone, Ananta Singh Raghuvanshi, Chairperson, NAREDCO Mahi, said, “The allotment of one crore homes to women under PMAY is an important step towards strengthening Nari Shakti. Owning a home, either in a woman’s name or through joint ownership, is not just about having a place to live. It also gives her a valuable financial asset that can strengthen her economic security, dignity and participation in important family decisions. At the same time, women are increasingly taking up leadership, entrepreneurial and professional roles across the real estate sector. This growing participation reflects a positive change in the industry.”

Reflecting on the evolving demographics within the sector, Smita Patil, President, NAREDCO Mahi, said, “Women are becoming an increasingly important part of India’s real estate journey. They are not only homeowners and investors, but are also making their mark as professionals, entrepreneurs and leaders. The PMAY milestone is particularly significant because home ownership can give women a stronger financial foundation and greater confidence in making long-term decisions. Going forward, creating more opportunities for women across the real estate value chain will be important for building a more inclusive and progressive industry.”

The organization concluded that as the real estate market advances into its next phase of growth, sustainable development will rely on recognizing women as key financial stakeholders, decision-makers, and industry leaders alongside their role as housing beneficiaries.
