International Literacy Day Celebrated at India Literacy Board
Lucknow, September 9, 2026: The State Resource Centre, Uttar Pradesh, and the India Literacy Board, Saksharta Niketan, jointly organised an International Literacy Day celebration at the Saksharta Niketan campus on Kanpur Road, they said in a press release.
Sandhya Tiwari, Director, State Resource Centre, India Literacy Board, welcomed the guests and formally inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp alongside the chief guest and other dignitaries. She outlined the history and necessity of International Literacy Day and highlighted the institution’s ongoing contributions to literacy development.
Chief Guest Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy, Chairman, India Literacy Board / State Resource Centre / UP RERA, virtually inaugurated 60 new literacy centres to be operated by the State Resource Centre and India Literacy Board across Mirzapur, Bahraich, and Balrampur districts for the 2026-27 financial year.
“Literacy is the key that opens the doors to education,” said Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy, noting UNESCO’s theme for the year, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.” He added that the India Literacy Board has remained a prominent hub for literacy development in North India since 1953.
Over the past five years, the State Resource Centre has educated 4,365 beneficiaries across eight districts, eight development blocks, and urban wards in the state. For the current financial year, the initiative aims to make 1,200 individuals literate through the 60 newly established centres. Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy, commended 39 students from Welthy Fisher Children’s Academy for participating in the “Each One Teach One” initiative and called for expanding the effort to involve 400 academy students.
Avinash Verma, Programme Officer, Shiv Nadar Foundation, detailed the foundation’s initiatives in adult education and stressed that active cooperation from the Department of Literacy and Alternative Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh, is essential for success.
Sudhakar Man Singh, Administrative Officer, State Resource Centre, presented an overview of literacy operations conducted over the last three financial years and confirmed the rollout of the new centres on September 8.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Anoop Kumar Srivastava, Nodal Officer, State Resource Centre. Officials from various educational boards, teachers, students, and remote beneficiaries from Mirzapur, Bahraich, and Balrampur attended the program in person and via video conference.
