CII IGBC and Goa Officials Deliberate on Green Standards for State’s Hotels and Residential Projects

Panaji, April 24, 2026: The Confederation of Indian Industry’s Indian Green Building Council (CII IGBC) hosted a high-level stakeholder engagement in Panaji on April 23, 2026, aimed at embedding sustainability into Goa’s rapid urban and tourism expansion.

According to a press release, the event, titled “Driving Goa’s Green Hospitality & Habitat,” brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and urban planners to align on strategies for resource efficiency and climate-responsive development. Currently, Goa’s green footprint spans nearly 10 million square feet across 88 registered projects, including major sites like the NIT Goa Campus and various net-zero commercial developments.State officials emphasized that maintaining the state’s ecological balance is paramount as it pursues aggressive growth targets.

Addressing the assembly, Digambar Kamat, Minister for PWD, Legal Metrology & Captain of Ports, stated, “Goa has the potential to be among the world’s best habitats, but achieving this requires a careful balance between development and environmental preservation. Striking the right equilibrium between mining and ecology through strict regulations is essential.” He further noted the state’s long-term vision, adding, “Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, we are committed to achieving a ‘Viksit Goa by 2037’ with the active support of society and all sectors.”The IGBC reaffirmed its role as a technical partner to the state, focusing on integrating green norms into local regulations and the hospitality sector.

K. Kula Sekhar, Chair of the IGBC Goa Chapter, remarked, “Our engagement with the Government of Goa marks an important step in strengthening institutional collaboration, enabling knowledge exchange, and supporting the adoption of green building standards that contribute to a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and future-ready built environment.”The conclave underscored the economic necessity of sustainable design in a tourism-driven economy.

Prakash Jalan, Co-Chair of the IGBC Goa Chapter, emphasized, “Goa stands at a pivotal moment where growth in hospitality and residential development must go hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship. At IGBC, we believe that integrating green building practices, resource efficiency, and climate-responsive design is a necessity.” The session concluded with a commitment from industry experts and government representatives to pursue a “Swachh Goa, Green Goa” through continued advisory support and capacity-building initiatives.
