Global Organizations Form Coalition to Standardize Sustainability for AI Data Centers

By Realtynmore 3h ago

London, April 23, 2026: In a move to address the environmental footprint of the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector, nine of the world’s leading building and sustainable finance organizations have launched the Greening AI Data Centers Coalition (GADCC). The global initiative aims to establish clear, credible benchmarks for sustainable data center development as the demand for computing power accelerates worldwide. By creating transparent standards, the coalition intends to help investors and policymakers distinguish genuine sustainability from “greenwashing” and direct capital toward facilities that protect water resources and energy systems.

According to a press release, the GADCC brings together an unprecedented group of founding members, including the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the Climate Bonds Initiative, and the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Other key partners include the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), the Green Building Councils of Australia (GBCA) and South Africa (GBCSA), the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC). Together, these bodies represent a global powerhouse of expertise in building certification, green finance, and environmental performance.

The launch comes at a critical juncture for urban infrastructure. Data centers currently account for approximately 1.5% to 2% of global electricity consumption, a figure the International Energy Agency projects will more than double by 2030. Beyond energy, the growing water footprint of these facilities has begun to strain local supplies, with some centers consuming as much water as a small city. Without standardized oversight, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure risks driving up utility costs for residents and crowding out renewable energy access for other essential sectors.

The coalition’s primary mission is to ensure that digital growth does not come at the expense of global decarbonization. If left unchecked, the reliance of new data centers on fossil fuels or scarce water resources could undermine the long-term viability of the AI industry itself. To combat this, the GADCC will focus on two immediate priorities: developing an internationally aligned framework of performance standards—covering energy, carbon, biodiversity, and community impact—and supporting the creation of credible green finance instruments like green bonds for compliant projects.

Emphasizing the importance of responsible growth, Peter Templeton, President and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), highlighted the strategic necessity of the new body. “We are proud to be a founding member of this coalition to accelerate sustainable design and operations in data centers worldwide. As a strategic asset class, data centers are central to technological innovation and economic growth. Through this coalition, we are committing our collective expertise to balancing this growth with responsible development that protects energy affordability, local resources, and quality of life,” Templeton stated.

As AI continues to transform the global economy, the GADCC’s work is expected to provide the essential roadmap for a digital future that remains within the planet’s ecological limits. By aligning environmental and social performance standards, the coalition seeks to foster a sustainable infrastructure model that supports both technological advancement and community well-being.
