VASTU SHASTRA: The Vedic way of creating harmony between Space Energy Life

Dr Aarushi Sadhotra
Vastu Shastra is an ancient art and science of architecture and spatial energy management. As per Vastu Shastra, the premises we inhabit influences our physical health, mental peace, relationships, and prosperity. Every structure with /four walls – our home, office, shop, or factory – interacts continuously with natural forces such as sunlight, wind flow, gravity, and the earth’s magnetic field which, in turn, impacts the inhabitants.
The principle of Vastu Shastra helps in the alignment of these forces so that life flows with stability and ease. Unlike common misconceptions, Vastu is not about superstition or blind belief. It is a logical, experience-based science refined over thousands of years and adapted today for modern living.
Striking a balance
For a lay person’s understanding, Vastu Shastra is striking a balance of the five natural elements (Pancha Mahabhutas):
• Earth (Prithvi): Signifies stability, strength, and grounding
• Water (Jal): Related to flow, emotions, and wealth
• Fire (Agni): Energy, action, transformation, and digestion
• Air (Vayu): Movement, thoughts, and communication
• Space (Akash): Expansion, clarity, and opportunities
When the above elements are balanced in a premises, they support health, happiness, growth and wellbeing, but when disturbed, they may reflect as stress, anxiety, illness, financial instability, or emotional imbalance.
In modern times
In today’s lifestyle, people spend most of their time indoors far from nature. High rise building, apartments, offices, and commercial complexes are often built with limited consideration for natural flow of energy.
This is where Vastu becomes especially relevant to work with existing structures for aligning energies of five elements without any demolition, to enhance comfort, efficiency, and peace. Vastu does not change destiny, but it aids removal of obstacles that block progress.
Vastu in home
A home is not just a place to live in, it is an energy field that nurtures the people living inside it. Starting from the main door, which is the entry point of energy, everything should always be correctly placed. A well-lit, clutter-free entrance attracts opportunities and positive interactions.
After entrance, comes our living room, which should encourage openness and harmony. Proper seating, warm ambience and good ventilation help maintain healthy family relationships.
Bedroom is the most important space in a house where we spend most of our time at a stretch ie while sleeping should be in southwest. The direction of sleep and placement of furniture in the room affects the quality of sleep and emotional stability. Sleeping with the head towards the south or east, followed by west, promotes deep sleep and calmness.
Kitchen, the other name for fire, must be balanced in southeast zone of house. Improper placement of hob and sink in kitchen may cause health issues or family conflicts. Bathrooms and toilets are usually called energy drainers if not handled properly. Remedies neutralise their impact.
Health, mental peace
Health is deeply connected to environmental balance. Many recurring health issues like insomnia, anxiety, digestion problems, or chronic fatigue, may be aggravated by Vastu imbalances. Vastu ensures that there is proper airflow and natural light, there are no seating or sleeping arrangements under heavy beams.
Using soothing colors related to the element in bedrooms calms the mind and supports the person emotionally. The presence of electronics in the bedroom is against vastu rules. A Vastu-aligned home supports natural healing and emotional stability.
Office and business
Workspaces influence productivity, leadership, and growth. Vastu-aligned offices often experience improved team harmony, better decision-making, and smoother operations.
Key principles includes owner, or the manager seating in the south-west of the office. Sales people to sit facing north or east in the northwest and northeast segment. Finance team sitting in south facing north. Research and development happening in northeast zone again. Pantry in southeast zone and toilets in west, northwest of the office areas will support consistent growth and reputation, not to forget natural light and ventilation.
Vastu remedies without demolition
One of the biggest fears people have is that Vastu requires breaking walls or reconstruction. In reality, most Vastu defects can be corrected without demolition at minimal costs. Non-invasive remedies include directional balancing, colour therapy, aroma therapy, sound therapy, furniture rearrangement, elemental corrections, and crystals, plants etc. Ethical Vastu focuses on practicality, budget, and comfort.
Vastu is a way of living. It is not one-time correction, but a lifestyle of awareness, cleanliness, balance, and respect for natural forces. When space and energy align, life feels lighter, calmer, and more purposeful. A Vastu-balanced space does not create miracles, but it creates the right environment for miracles to happen.
