Jewar, March 28, 2926: In a landmark event for India’s aviation and infrastructure landscape, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport on Saturday. The grand ceremony marked a pivotal shift for the region as the Prime Minister also inaugurated the airport’s dedicated cargo terminal and laid the foundation stone for a sprawling 40-acre Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility. Addressing a massive gathering, the Prime Minister framed the project as a cornerstone of regional transformation, stating, “This airport is not just an infrastructure project, but a new chapter of the ‘Viksit Bharat-Vikasit Uttar Pradesh’ campaign. This airport will act as a logistics gateway for North India, giving new momentum to investment, trade and exports.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that the airport is set to become a primary engine of growth for Western Uttar Pradesh, specifically highlighting benefits for districts such as Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Meerut, Ghaziabad, and Bulandshahr. He noted that the facility would create a “multi-modal” ecosystem where road, rail, and air transport are seamlessly integrated. During his speech, he expressed deep gratitude to the local farming community, noting that the project was made possible through their land contributions. He remarked that these very farmers would now see their agricultural products reach global markets with unprecedented ease, creating wide-ranging opportunities for small industries and the youth.

A significant portion of the Prime Minister’s address focused on India’s push toward self-reliance in the aviation sector. Highlighting the strategic importance of the new 40-acre MRO hub, he pointed out the historical drain on resources caused by a lack of domestic infrastructure. “Until now, about 85% of aircraft in India were sent abroad for MRO services, leading to high costs. The MRO facility being developed in Jewar will make the country self-reliant in this sector and create employment opportunities for thousands of youth,” he said. He further detailed the airport’s massive logistics potential, noting an initial cargo capacity of 2.5 lakh metric tonnes, with future expansion plans reaching 18 lakh metric tonnes.

Reflecting on the political journey of the project, the Prime Minister credited the “double engine government” for reviving a plan that had been stalled for nearly two decades. He informed the audience that while the project received initial approval in 2003, it remained “stuck in files” until recent coordination between central and state authorities brought it to fruition. “Uttar Pradesh is now among the states with the highest number of international airports. The state that chose him as its representative and elected him as a Member of Parliament is now identified with a grand airport. From here, flights will not only connect to different parts of the world, but will also symbolize the new flight of a Viksit Uttar Pradesh. Jewar Airport will connect the entire North India with the world. It will be a state-of-the-art airport with the capacity being developed for 1 aircraft to take off every 2 minutes,” he added.

The inauguration concluded with a symbolic gesture of public participation. In a unique move, Prime Minister Modi invited the thousands in attendance to switch on their mobile phone flashlights to participate in the official opening. “This airport is your trust, your future, your effort, therefore its inauguration should also be done by your hands,” he told the crowd. As the premise glowed with thousands of lights and echoed with slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” the event solidified the Noida International Airport’s status as a symbol of the ‘Udaan’ (flight) of a developing Uttar Pradesh.
